Natural gas is being phased out in favour of syngas, which is a more thermally efficient liquid fuel. Syngas may be burned to generate power with no cost in terms of carbon emissions. As a result, instead of the commonly used natural gas, it delivers a far cleaner, more cost-effective, and sustainable source of energy. The commercial value of synthesis gas and its derivatives is significant. Due to the increased demand for new hydrogen production plants, they are required to meet the new fuel environmental standards.Furthermore, novel applications of gas-to-liquids and coal-to-liquids technologies are entering the construction pipeline, with biomass-to-liquids following closely behind. Significant research and development efforts have been made to reduce the overall cost of syngas production, such as ceramic membrane reactors (ITM Syngas and OTM alliance), which eliminate the need for a cryogenic oxygen plant, catalytic plasma reactors, micro-reactors, and membrane steam reforming with flameless distributed combustion, among other things. Based on feedstock, the Asia Pacific syngas market is segmented into natural gas, coal, petroleum, pet-coke, biomass and coal. The coal segment is expected to dominate the market due to its easy availability as raw material and also its application in the production of syngas. Asia Pacific syngas market is consolidating as large players complementing each other's businesses by means of collaborations and acquisitions. For instance, in 2011 Linc Energy acquired significant oil producing assets in Louisiana and Texas.
